The Global Category Manager forMarketing is a key member of the Indirect Procurement Team and leads strategicsourcing activities for Columbia Sportswear Company’s global Marketing spend,with the goal of delivering sustainable, year-over-year reductions in the totalcost of goods or services procured, while maintaining or improvingproduct/service quality and vendor performance. This person works closely withkey stakeholders in the Marketing, Retail and other business groups acrossbrands and regions to develop effective cost reduction strategies,implementation plans and supplier management practices.


Category Strategy and Implementation

  • Ensure a deep expertise within the Marketing category area, byaccessing internal data and external knowledge to ensure the category strategyis informed by an intimate knowledge of the supply market, key dynamics andlatest thinking within the field
  • Lead the development of category sourcing strategies i.e. supply marketanalysis, cost modelling and benchmarking
  • Lead category strategy implementation activities including localizationof category strategies and contract management
  • Develop, deliver and track annual plans for category and scope andtheir value creation, drive annual productivity improvements in each spend category,track performance and define budgetary impact

Sourcing and Supplier Management

  • Lead supplier selection and negotiation process, execute sourcingactivities
  • Lead the contract review process, working closely with business unitmanagers, Legal, Risk, Accounting and IT to ensure proper review and capture ofbusiness and legal terms.
  • Ensure timeliness and quality of all contracts required for compliantand reliable business operations i.e. implementation in the appropriate systems,category compliance, contract management
  • Support global, local and regional supplier management activities(performance reporting and the monitoring and management of compliance)
  • Ensure the appropriate risk mitigation measures are in place for supplier/partnerselection and contractual protection

Stakeholder Management/Business Partnership

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with key businessstakeholders
  • Manage and monitor strategy development and implementation, working inpartnership with the business unit teams across brands and regions
  • Provide efficient and consistent communication content to ensuredissemination of category specific messages (status, plans, compliance andmarket insights)
  • Support the business unit teams by providing access to Procurementtools and reporting
  • Support thedevelopment of a Supplier Performance Management framework for strategic supplierpartners


  • Successful, multi-year track record in a procurement organization with minimumof 5-8 years relevant experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, MBA preferred
  • Depth of marketing category knowledge, including agency, media, event,2D and 3D production with demonstrated success in sourcing and managing thesecategories on a global scale
  • Previous experience managing direct reports
  • Exceptional problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong planning/project management skills
  • Proven ability to negotiate pricing, business and contract terms
  • Ability to effectively build and manage relationships and influenceothers at all levels of an organization
  • Quick study – able to gain a fact-based understanding of supply baseand specific situations
  • Ability to logically analyze and solve complex issues related to vendorperformance, contracts and business partner needs
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
